The Sumerians were very technologically advanced. They created a number system based on 60 (and if you look at any clock in your home, you can see that in use). They took the wheel and advanced it, creating the pottery wheel and wheeled transportation. And the Sumerians can be given some credit for modern sciences. Sumerian priests tracked the movement of the stars, and created calendars based on the movements.
The Sumerians also created "leeves" or dams on the Tigris and Euphrates to control flooding and water supply, so they were no longer forced to rely on yearly floods and always had a steady food supply.
